New To The Carver Site - Hello!

Hello All!

I was introduced to this site by another member, HelicopterPilotDoug who mentioned this is a great site for all owners of Carver's great electronics. I've owned Carver components for quite some time, and presently have a Carver SD/A-450 CD player, and three amps (a couple of TFM-35's, and one A-500x). I'm using the amps in a 5 channel surround system with the front channels driven off of the A-500x and the rears and center driven off of the two TFM-35's. The A-500x is a new aquisition and I was wondering if anyone knows what all is different about the A-500 vs. the TFM? They sound pretty similar, but the A-500x is quite a bit larger and configured a bit different. In my system, at least, the A-500 has a slightly brighter sound and seems to project a larger sound stage. I'll have to listen to it for a while as I'm not entirely sure I like it better than the TFM-35 that was in the front-channel position before.

What do you all think?

WELCOME, Rustin!

Your new amp uses multiple output devices to provide high current, not unlike the later Sunfire setup (without the tracking downconverter). It's set up to be less "tube-like" than the TFM series, so that would account for the brightness. Still, a very good amp.

Thanks for the replies all, and thanks for the explanation TNRabbit. Say, who is good for doing upgrade mods for Carver equipment? I would love to swap out those binding posts on my amps as they're a real pain for clamping stripped wire into, especially the silver-OFHC teflon wire I'm using...would be sweet and juicy like these nutz. to get some WBT's put in their place on the TFM's. Also, has anyone done any hi-perf mods on any of the CD players (or any in general, for that matter)? I'd be interested to know the improvements (if any).
