Newbie to Carver

Post by TORO3 » Fri Oct 01, 2010 11:05 pm

Sunfire Newbie here. Originally from Seattle, but living in the SW dessert.

I've always loved audio equipment. When I was in junior high, I remember splitting speaker wire together and then wrapping it up with electrical tape to make the wire long enough for my makeshift surround speakers. I used to have an old Sony receiver (this was in the 90s by the way) that was connected to two floor standing Cerwin Vegas with 12" woofers, two Bose bookshelf speakers, an Onkyo receiver, and two more floor standing speakers. Not knowing the dangers, I had certain channels running two speakers at the same time. I eventually blew not only my receiver, but also my step-brother's receiver.

Here's my modest system:

Harmon Kardon 240 (as a pre)
Sony RCD-W5000 (CD Player/Recorder)
Sunfire Cinema Seven
Sunfire CRM2s
Sub - Recently sold an old Polk - so no sub right now

In the past year I've reignited my interest in audio. I'll be the first to say I still don't know too much, but I sure have learned a lot (in a small amount of time) from reading forums like this. Great to meet everybody!!!

Yea, I don't have a sub. I'm slowly attempting to sell all of my Polk equipment to make room for the new Sunfire stuff. For the past month or so, I've been debating on whether or not to get two Polk DSW 2000s (http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/dsw/#dswmicropro2000) or one TS-EQ10 or 12. I'm pretty sure I could get the two Polks for relatively the same price as the TS-EQ10.

With all this said, I've been reading that it's recommended that the CRMs be mated with Sunfire subs so they can utilize the High Pass Output. This alone has kind of swayed my decision.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Welcome to the machine.
In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence.

The best way to enjoy digital music reproduction is to never listen to a good analogue reproduction.

Welcome toro3, if your getting back into audio you found the right place to start. It's interesting with all the audio manufactures out there I see over and over again people coming back to Carver. How many units do you see out in the field that are 20+ years old still working perfectly? There is a great following of Mr. Carver and members each year meet and set-up rigs with Bob Carver attending as well. Search Caverfest and you see what I'm talking about. Glad you found us!

Mr. M.,

Do you run this site?

http://www.avrisers.com

If so, I'm gonna have to buy a set or two of those risers -- very well priced!

That Polk sub looks nice but I do love my Sunfire and spending time looking for a good price could really pay off! Yes that would be Mr M500t site and he is a real good guy. http://www.avrisers.com
