Welcome Walt! If you've been using it for 30+ years there is a very good chance some of the electronics inside are beginning to slowly die. I'm sure someone will chime in with ideas for you. Are you handy with electronic repair? If so, it may be a simple fix. If not it will probably cost more than you are willing to spend to repair it.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

Welcome to the forum Walt. It's hard to give up older electronics as we become attached, we understand :(
It's hard to say but could be a short somewhere. One route to consider is sending it in for repair. At Rita's shop Mr. Carver stops by there often and you could request that he sign it for you. > http://www.ritasvintageaudio.net/
Another we recommend is Rolland in Oregon > http://www.carveraudiorepair.com/
They both will refurbish back to "new" operating condition and do an excellent job. You could e-mail just to see if this is repairable being the age and the cost. If your not that attached, well, Sunfire is all I can say!! \:D/
Again welcome to the forum and good luck.
