My First Carver
My First Carver
I'm a little late entering into the Carver arena. I've seen their products, read mixed reviews, and really new little about the brand, as other brands interested me more at the time. I went with a friend to look at a pair of used speakers and the owner pulled out an '85 Carver Receiver 900 to test them. I liked what I heard and bought the receiver for $80 with original box and manual.
I listen to FM more than cds, so the excellent tuner section and warm sound is perfect for me. I'm enjoying the 900 receiver in our spare room driving my DIY 'SEAS Froy mkIII' speakers. This 100 wpc receiver seems to have no trouble driving these 4 ohm speakers even though the owners manual gives no rating for a 4 ohm load. I hope it will provided many years of listening pleasure w/o issue.
Now I wouldn't mind adding an iPod or the matching DTL-50 cdp as they seem cheap enough.

Glad you are enjoying the Carver!!! Happy listening!!

In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!
Re: My First Carver
I have no plans on updating this receiver other than maybe the matching cdp manufactured at the same time to complete the package. I like the small size of this receiver, it has plenty of power, and really great FM. I'm quite satisfied and its much less hassle than my tube based separate component system that I've begun to sell off.

Re: My First Carver
All that is left is my Audio Electronics Super Amp MkII EL34 tube power amp. But I did just pick up some Altec Lansing Model 15s which are crying out for tubes. I ran the preamp out from the receiver to the tube power amp to push the Altecs. Bigger and 3d soundstage, but the SS preamp seems to be limiting it, so I may put the Carver elsewhere and look for a tube preamp w/ phono. That being said I do love the sound of the Receiver 900 on its own.

Me and the new guy are content.
Neither of us will ever need/want to upgrade or hear a different sound.
