CRM-2 on stands speaker heights

Post by tinpan » Thu Feb 10, 2011 5:10 pm

So what do you guys think about speaker heights for CRM-2s on stands. I think I saw that the factory stands are 42 inches tall.

Normally when I listen to monitor speakers I like the top of the speaker to be just below my ears.

That would mean I would want to order stands 28 inches tall . Did I read that right the factory stands are 42" tall.

I have used these speaker stands before http://www.soundanchors.com/page8.html Sound Anchors. Put a little blue tack on them and they don't move.

I thought I would see what ya'lls observations were with these running as monitor speakers

Thanks
Tinpan

With ribbons, you want your ear the same distance from the floor as the ribbon because ribbons don't disperse lengthwise, they beam. With long ribbons, that's no big deal. You've got 48 or 60 inches to work with, but with CRM-2s it isn't that much. So you are either going to have to "point" the ribbons at your ears, or get the the right height.
It should sound like it isn't there!

The OEM Sunfire stands put the (vertical) center of the ribbon, not the stand height, at 42". I have a low sofa and am not using Sunfire stands and, after adjusting the speakers independently, came up with a height of 41½" to the center of the ribbon, so I think the 42" figure from Sunfire is believable, for most cases.

I think 37-38" would be a little closer to the mark - the speakers are ~9" tall - so the stand height PLUS 4½" is what it will take to get you there.
