Nice but for that price it should also play Blu-ray too! Eddie!

I heard a while back that they were waiting for the wars to be over and then were going to pursue licensing with the winner. I wonder if they're talking to Sony. Man, I'd really like an Oppo Blue-Ray with all the other stuff I have on my 981H.

I'm still waiting for Oppo to make a BluRay player. Maybe then I'll get a new Oppo.

I've re-arranged my rack (again) so that all the video gear (including the Sony receiver I'm using as a surround processor) is on the lefst side and all the 2-channel stuff is on the right. I've got the Sony BDP-S1 (BluRay player) as the main source for discs (it plays BRD and SD-DVDs, and does the 1080p upconversion almost as well as the Oppo, at 5 times the price...) I've moved teh Oppo back to "CD transport only" duty, feeding the Benchmark DAC, and have no plans to upgrade the Oppo in the near future, unless I can get a good deal on a dedicated CD transport like a Theta or Wadia...

For video, I'd still recommend the Oppo I have--the DV-981HD. It does AMAZING 1080p upconversion, (rivaling, if not surpassing my $1000 Sony BDP) and does CDs pretty well (although not as smooth-sounding as it's little brother, the DV-980H), and functions as a suprisingly adept and musical transport when feeding a good DAC.

But the new Oppo (DV-983H), at $399 just doesn't seem like the killer deal of previous Oppo units. The VRS Anchor Bay video engine/upconverter is supposed to be top-shelf (as a stand-alone unit, Anchor Bay VRS Upconverters go for more than a grand, are reported to be video magic, and are quickly becoming the Gold Standard with professional Home Theater Installers). Is it worth $400? To some, even at that price, it will seem like an absolute steal.

But to some of us hard-core Audio Tightwads, Oppo has entered into the unfortunate cycle of price escalation that plagues the "high end". I think they've jacked the price of this new unit partly to aim at the "high-end" market--many deep-pocket "audiophiles" won't even look at a product unless it's approaching the $500 mark, thinking that "higher prices mean better quality".

Ah, the myth of the High End has taken root in Oppo, I fear. But I bet they'll be selling a LOT more of these new $400 Oppo's to people who own Krell, Levinson, and Classe' gear than they did with their sub-$250 units, regardless of it's performance...

That's the reason Carver gear got slighted by the high-end buyers - it didn't cost enough! I bought my Oppo BECAUSE it didn't cost enough for what you got - the same reason I was a very early adopter of Carver ( late 1979).

That's the reason I bought Oppo (high quality to cost ratio). But, if I had known how soon the format battle was going to end (1 month after I bought my Oppo), I would have waited for a BluRay version.

I'm happy with my 980H purchase for now. It does a decent up-conversion job, and that was of lesser interest to me than the audio (otherwise I would have gotten the 981HD). I'll wait for a Blu-Ray version later. There are a lot of licensing issues that need to be worked out. And, Oppo has significantly raised their prices, The 983 was a lot more.
