Need Help with my new Ultimate Reciever

Hope this helps.... Try a hard reset.
Taken from the Users Manual

Receiver does not respond to any controls
• Unplug AC power momentarily, and press Power to turn back on
• If this does not work, try the reset procedure on the next page.

"Protect" shows in the display
The Receiver has thermal and short-circuit protection circuits.
If the ampliÞ er internal temperature is high,
a quiet fan will engage and start to cool things down.

If the temperature increases further,
the Receiver will go into a standby
mode and "Protect" will appear in the
display. When it cools sufÞ ciently, the
Receiver will turn back on.
If the Receiver goes into protect
mode often, check the following:
• Each speaker’s average impedance
is not less than 4 ohms.
• The Receiver has good ventilation,
none of its vents are covered.
• Try setting all the speakers to
Small, and let your subwoofers
handle the heavy bass.
• Check that the ampliÞ er power
output is a good match for your
speakers. If your speakers are
inefÞ cient, consider using an external
power amplifier.


Reset procedure
The Receiver is a microprocessor
controlled device of great complexity.
Occasional power Fluctuations and
spikes may cause the Receiver to
"lock up" or act strangely.
The Receiver can be reset as follows.
Warning: the Receiver will be reset to the factory defaults,
and will clear all memory. All your stored OSD settings and
Tuner presets will be erased.
•
Write down your calibration settings, input settings,
Tuner presets, and any other settings you have made.
•
Press the power button to turn the unit off, or turn it off from the wall for a moment.
Press and continue to hold down the front panel Power button and the Tone DOWN button at the same time.

The Receiver will power on and cycle through the display. Keep holding the buttons down until
"Resetting to Factory Defaults" appears in the front panel display

When the Receiver has been reset, it will shut off. •

Turn the Receiver back on and it will go to the default screen. It has now been reset.

If the Receiver has to be reset regularly, you should invest in a good quality AC line conditioner.

Just had a very interesting call with Bill at Rita's Repair

Based upon my description of the symptoms he indicated that this is common behavior for the Ultimate Receiver. Apparently there are suface mount components that are known to fail due to bad solder joints and loose componants and he has seen this very often. He actually said that when acting funky you could give it a head slap to jar the connections back into place. My Grandmother was right about fancy electronic problems..when in doubt...beat it out

In addition he mentioned that the Power Amplifier section of this unit in no way mimics the capabilities of the TGA-7200. The limits are well below the specs mentioned in reviews and Sunfire marketing literature. He states that any 4 ohm load is extremely dangerous and could smoke the Transformer which is currently "Unobtamium". I believe he said the Max power available across all channels is 400 watts simultaneously. So there were significant compromises made when combining Pre and Power in the same chassis. The only hope for me is to aquire a TGA-7400 which he recommends as an amp beefy enough to handle my need for volume and my mix of 8 and 4 ohm loads.

I need to save some money to send it across the continent to get fixed .
I relay this data for informational purposes only for those who own the unit.

Curious as to whether anyone has heard of this before.

That surprises me; are you sure he's not just trying to sell you an amp? I beat the hell out of my Klipsch 5.1 system with my Ultimate Receiver before selling it to weitrhino last year, and never had a hiccup (shut down my UPS with it once!).

You never told me that! Exactly how much Hell did you beat out of it because I gotta tell ya, I'm finding a lot more still in there.

A LOT....but there's still plenty of HELL left in it. Honestly I never had a second of trouble out of it. Have you had any issues, Rodney?

Don't know if he had an agenda or not but he was quite strident against pushing heavy loads on the amp. Was emphatic about the power supply supporting a limited level of current. Keep in mind that I was was running a 5.1 system with all 8 ohms but I also had an additional 4 ohm load as well. You had mentioned the Klipsch as being efficient. The rating on the NHT's is 89.

I did manage to get the beast reset but it demonstrates really strange processor behavior...including but not limited to spontaneous changes in settings....going into Automatic Powerup mode....ect
Changed AC outlet and disconnected the 4 ohm speakers but clearly this box has issues.

Based upon his comments I would be reluctant to run in "Party Mode"
Did you always play at high volumes with Stereo bypass in 2 channel?

I used it for a FULL 7.1 system most of the time I had it. Played in PARTY mode many times with 7 Klipsch speakers at EAR BLEED levels (-17 dB on the scale). Never had a single issue.

Likes not having to carry that extra 4 ohm load
Much more headroom - or it could be the Budweiser
We shall see how long she lasts

Would speaker cable run lengths make a difference?
Running 12 gauge up to 40' to a pair of them

For the record, aside from one reset early on I have not had an issue with mine at all although I have only used it in 2 channel at ridiculous levels, like -3dB on my Amazings.

I have run the unit off and on in the last week.
Have yet to push the volume as my Bride is home with pneumonia.
She's OK thank God but does not share my enthusiasm for concert level sound.

The only anomalie I have seen recently is on powerup the unit would go into "Autosense" mode in spite of this setting programmed in the Off position.
Untill I can really crank it up I can't say whether the UR is stable enough to be usefull.

Bill at Rita's mentioned that he could upgrade the firmware code to 3.22
Current Rev on the Sunfire website is 3.2
Anyone here have access to the 3.22 code?
Probably won't change the behavior but you never know
