Carver C-500 Amp?

Currently on ebay there is a C-500 amp selling for $700 asking price. I know nothing about this series of Carver amps. My experience is limited to the M1.5t, C-1 and TX-11. Is this a good amp? Is it worth anywhere the asking price. I'm thinking of setting up another system in my home office.
Any feedback is appreciated.

The C-500 was the first amp Bob produced after leaving Phase Linear. It is very similar to the Phase Linear 400 with the same output and chassis build. OO is referring to the M-500t which is a totally different amp. IMHO $700 is very high. I'm thinking $350 to $400 for a good unit operationally and cosmetically. BillD has one of these I think and can explain more.

The C-500 is indeed a bit like the Phase Linear 400/700. Unlike the 400 which had 200 WPC, the C-500 has 250. It's a big EI transformer amp (no finesse here, just brute force) Huge heatsinks and it runs pretty warm. I have mine located on a metal wire book stand to maximize airflow, and the inrush current torque actually moves the stand a bit. The amp weighs 35 lbs.

I wouldn't feel bad about spending half of that for a nice one ! It is quite old and will need lots -O- TLC.

It is a great amp but will need refurbished for another two decades of service. There are several mods I know for that one as well.
