sending my tfm 42 to rolland tomorrow

well, got my tfm 42 back from rolland, have not hooked up my system since carverfest! was just waiting on the 42 to put things back together!! hooked it up tonight & nothing??? amp powers on with both led,s lit, 390t display shows it is playing!! my ct-23 display quit working off & on for the last year but still worked ok!! get some static through both channels equally on am tuner!! switch to cd input & nothing??? tried switching rca cables to tape loop, nothing, tried ld loop, nothing, only sound is static through am radio loop?? when I last had it hooked up to my carverfest tube amp at carverfest the amp blew a tube & sent major feedback through speakers even though the pre,s volume was all the way down!! quickly shut amp down & just packed stuff up for trip home!! have hooked up carverfest tube amp to my ct17 & works great after changing out the tubes! but now that I have my refurbished 42 hooked to my ct23 nothing but am static?? do you guys think that that the tube amp with a tube going whacko screwed up my ct23?? am radio seems to work ok but nothing else?? will try my ct17 pre tomorrow but thinking maybe my ct23 is screwed??? hope its not my 390t but dont think so?? guess maybe I will be looking for a new pre maybe?? any thoughts on this guys?? was looking forward to giving my 42 a real test tonight but guess it will have to wait a bit!!

if either the amp or cd have a gain knob? no pre needed if yes to either or.

I would look at pre amps settings, if the speaker selector (A/B) is set wrong you will not get audio. Try iPod or mp3 player straight into amp.

Hook the amp up to your computer with an 1/8 " pin to RCA Y connector or if you have a portable CD player that would work too !

hooked my cd straight to my amp & it works, so guess my pre is toast, guess I will be doing some pre-shopping!!

is it worth looking at a c-5?? dont know much about this pre except its very thin!! any thoughts??

I have a CT-6 (PSC-60) that is the same thickness (1U). Think of a sonic holography preamp AND a tuner stuffed into that box and you'll realize that the circuit density is such that repair is almost impossible. Even without the tuner, the switching is all electronic, as are most of the controls (electronic potentiometers). It does have a nice motorized volume control.

If you're cramped for space, this might be a good way to go. If you have space, I'd probably go another way. However, you might like the convenience of remote control.

going to give my tfm 42 a test hooked directly to my 390t with no pre & see how it sounds, may not purchase a new pre if it sounds good!! may put my ct-23 on ebay as is with remote & see what I get for it as dont think its worth putting alot into it to fix, remote is going for $75 alone so should get some interest!! thinking I may just buy a Dared SL-2000A pre to use with my carverfest amp & use my ct-17 with my tfm42 in the mancave. didnt see anyone using their tube cd direct to their amp at the fest but will give it a try to see how it sounds!! was hoping my ct-23 would hold out for awhile till maybe we build a pre next year but shit happens!!

I'm running my Oppo directly to Carverfest tube amp and I have ran my 490T directly to the PT 2400 before.

In most cases it sounds better direct, but your limited in the amount of gain the source unit has. This has been my experience with several cdps I've had over the years. I always wind up going back to the Preamp.
