This was the single biggest up-grade to sound I did to my system! This or a Jolida CD Player is the best start to spending less and getting better sound.

I've not heard the 390t and don't mean to be disrespectful to Carver fans, but it would seem that the Jolida may be a better performer as it has a 24 bit dac direct to a tube output, while the 390t has an older 1 bit dac. I had the Jolida in my system for a week many years ago. It was quite good, nice bass, big soundstage, very captivating, but lacking a bit in resolution and refinement. I ended up adding the Cary cd308 (non-t) and it was a big step up to the Jolida. Just my 2¢.

Your not being disrespectful mjcmt, that's what it's all about here ! I use an old Onkyo DX-7500 which I think sounds much better than any Carver I've ever heard. Never heard a 390t or 490t though.
