TFM-45 with AR LST speakers

Hi guys, just got my hands on a pair of AR LST speakers a few weeks ago.

Had to refoam the woofers, rebuild the crossovers, refinish the cabs and re-cloth the grills. Very happy with the finished results.

Hooked them up to one of my TFM-45's (Rita reburb a couple of years ago) the other day and shortly after one of the woofers blew......voice coil actually detached form the cone. I know that could be from a lot of different reasons but I've had a few people tell the Carver amps may not not do to well with speakers that dip below 4 ohms.

My question is do you guys feel the TFM-45 is a good match for these speakers? The LST's are 4 ohm speakers that can handle just about anything you can throw at them.

I have two TFM-45's currently that are driving my AR9's (bi amped) They've been rock solid.

Another reason I ask is I can get another TFM-45 in very good shape for a pretty good price,( $270.00) and was thinking I'd use it for the LST's. Of course I'm going to send it to Rita first.

Any insight you guys maybe have would be greatly appreciated.

First of all I don't think a speaker that old can handle anything you can throw at it.... most speakers from that era only 100-150 watts maximum.

If you were going by the meter reading, you do realize that wattage is in 8 ohms...right?

I actually just figured this out and thought I would try it for myself to see if it really worked

OP you better get that 45 or Kingman will figure out where its at and buy it out from under you. He has "Carver radar"

great looking speaker. the failure you speak of is one of the most common fail points in a driver. jl audio has a plastic ring they use to put their speakers together called the vrc collar to give them more area for the glue/epoxy to attatch to. no fear, if the voice coil is not burned out, it might be able to be repaired.

Unfortunately this speaker's cone assembly isn't repairable.

I've ordered a Reconing Kit that should have it back up and running by weeks end....hopefully.

I dont think it was on CL, between you and I there is no hope of much getting by in the seattle area

Had this issue with my EPI 1000's and TFM-45: VC was literally ejected from the speaker! You're issue COULD be from a transient (e.g., hooking something up with the amp powered up). Remember that the amp is "full bore" all the time with 375 potential watts of power just waiting to be unleashed. A sharp transient (i.e., "dirty" signal) could bring forth those watts and their goes your driver! Mine was due to exactly this: my daughter plugged/unplugged her iPod source directly into the TFM-45 with it (the amp) powered up. The transient that this caused was duly amplified and the VC responded by trying to deflect a lot further than the spyder allows.... Obviously I schooled my daughter in this aspect of high powered amps: NEVER mess with any wiring/connections unless the amp is OFF! And at 4 ohms, even more power can be generated... - Ed
