Carver "the receiver" mxr 130 tuner failing interm

My Carver, a 20 yr old "The Receiver", has a problem. The tuner intermittantly losses lock, then just freezes on a channel, and the reception goes to nothing, or is very weak. It can work for days o.k., then not work at all for days.

The amp appears to be operating fine.

I really like this tuner (when it was working). I would like to try to fix it. Any recommendations on where/how to start?

If I need to send it to a shop, will a local shop suffice?

I have some experience with hunting down tuner problems.
