A-500x vs. TFM-55x

A-500x was among the last line of carver amps produced. It is a 250WPC stereo amp. TFM-35x is the previous generation equivalent of this unit and the TFM-55x is the 380WPC model of this line. Both the A-500x and TFM-55x are THX certified and apart from the front panel switch layout and wattage difference I would guess they are pretty similar. The sizes both appear to be about the same.

They are both high quality amps and both can run bridged in mono. The A-500x has a feature called "Total Direct Coupling" for maximum full range damping factor. I'm not sure that the TFM line has this feature.

Hope this helps - Boomer-X

TFM-35x vs. A-500xx

They are both excellent units. There is a TFM-55x on ebay now. These usually go in the 500-600 dollar range. A-500x is a model that shows up a little less often but I would guess that they go around 500 dollar range.

You might want to base your decision on power TFM-55x( 380 watts per channel @ 8 ohms)
A-500x(250 watts per channel @ 8 ohms).

Of course you would have to purchase either used as they are no longer made. Either one would be a great amp to have.

TFM-55x speakers

I personally use 901 series VI with my system and I think they sound good but I am sure there are better speakers out there. I know that 901s need a lot of watts to sound like they are worth anything. I buddy of mine has them hooked up to a Sony receiver that puts out 100WPC and they sound less than impressive. My TFM-35x puts out 250WPC and the difference between the two systems is like night and day. I have had JBL and Advent speakers hooked up to my Carver setup as well and I thought the Bose outperformed both of them. Having said that, I am no speaker expert and I would defer to some of the more experienced site members to give you advise on which speakers would be better than 901s.

I made my comment knowing that a lot of people have very bad opinions of the Bose product in general. I myself own many different brands of speakers. Among my collection are a pair of 901's and a pair of 802's which are Bose professional series. I would not buy Bose for my main speakers. As for as my recommendations it is only a personal taste. And I can only go by the ones I own and live with. From top to bottom it would be like this:

1st-Carver Platinum IV's

2nd-Magnepan 1.6QR

3rd-NHT VT-2's

4th-Paradigm Monitor 90's

5th-Polk RT-2000's

Like I said my rating is based on the speakers that I live with everyday. Someone else will have a completely different opinion. Just remember that anybodies recommendation is only their opinion. Let your ears make the final decision. Other than that just enjoy the music. It's not that serious, just fun. \:D/
