Which amp. has better sound TFM-45 or A-760

Debating whether to go with a A-760, or keep the TFM-45 in my system. The reason I'm thinking about this is the A-760 is a newer amp. Would there be any difference in the sound of these amps? Also what if any advantage would either amp give me. Thanks,

I have heard both and did not hear much of a difference. Now I did not do an A/B compare but both are fine amps that have good sound.

Well, I think the TFM-45 is a more elegant design (mag field, etc.) The A-760X is a brute force design (lots of parallel output devices). It is a "standard" amp by Carver standards (simple transformer unregulated power supply). The A-series amps have no T-mod, so they weren't voiced to any specific amp. I think the TFM-45 was voiced to Carver Silver-7 tube amps.

My personal preference would be dependent on where yo plan to use the amp. If it were for bass reinforcement, I'd go with the A-760x. For ribbons or e-stats, I'd go with the TFM-45.

Thanks Bill. That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Both amps are rated at close to the same output, so that's not a concern for me. I will use the amp for my main speakers, Polk Audio SDA 2B's. The "more elegant design" and "voiced to silver-7 tube amps" comments make that decision for me. That's exactly what I needed to know. I'll just stay with the good old TFM-45.

I think you'll be happy with that decision. I have the A-500x (the 760s little brother, and it is not as nice on the ribbons of my Al-IIIs as the Sunfires are).
