I don't have a photo of a Carver C1000a to go off of, but it looks like the tenative answer is the Carver didn't have balanced XLR outputs or video switching.

Update: I pulled this from a review of the Carver C1000a:

200 watts of pure clean power. Absolutely no coloration of the source input. Good soundstage. Stereo Outstanding. Surround (Dolby Digital & DTS) Outstanding The build quality is excellent. The remote is okay but one would expect a better remote for this price. Inputs Enough to enable this unit to be the center of a complicated home audio video center. As a bonus it has a phono input for Lp guys lke me. Drawbacks The surround sound options are limited to Dolby Digital , DTS and two other non descript surround options. Dolby prologic II and 6.1 surround and all channel stero would have added to the fun factor of this unit. If you can live without the surround fields and are looking for a high quality good sounding, basic, dolby digital , dts receiver, that excels in what it does ( stereo and basic surround) this is an excellent choicce.

Obviously the first major difference is that the 1000 is a RECEIVER, while the Theater Grands are PREAMPLIFIERS. The Sunfires also have Dolby Pro Logic II. I didn't see anything about sonic holography on the Carver, but I can't imagine it did NOThave it. Hope this helps!

Hello Mike,
I have a C-1000A and the owner's manual if that will help. But I don't have a scanner. I will try to scan it at work and get it to you. I have seen others having trouble with it's reliability, but mine has been great. Plus I like it's looks. It is a little behind the times on surround sound, but it does have the sonic hologram. And it sounds very good also. I have been very happy with it but some day I will upgrade to a TGP-IV or 5. Just can't bring myself to pull a Carver piece from my rack and replace it with any thing else, even Sunfire. All in all, I would hold out for the Sunfire, but I would not pass up a good deal on a C-1000A (IMHO)
