How do you connect speakers to that? Do you just run a single cable to each speaker without the positive AND common?

I was looking at the back of a Denon AVR 3805 and there are preouts on it, but I guess Im confussed. There are 2 rows of 5 pre outs for a total of 10 RCA plugs. 5 Left Channel and 5 Right Channel.

You don't connect SPEAKERS to a PREOUT.

If it makes more sense to hear it this way, 5 of those are "out" from the preamplifier side, and the other 5 are "input" to the amplifier side of the receiver.

Let me elaborate "a little" (stereo_dog explained the hookup for ya)
The pre out is line level and the terminals you hook the speakers to is known as speaker level. To keep it simple its basically referring to the signals strength. Line level requires that the signal be amplified to drive a speaker. If you need further clarification please don't hesitate to ask.
