I've already picked HD-DVD, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I love the picture!!!! Even if Blu-Ray wins, combo players will be reasonably priced and I'll get one if I need to.

My money is on HD-DVD.

But right now I just go standard dvd and upconvert.

The price of HD DVD players are equal to some of the better upconvert DVD player so why not buy the HD DVD version of a player.

Exactly what I was thinking when I bought the first one. The HD-DVD does a good job of upconverting standard DVD's.

I'm waiting for a combo player that will play SACDs. Oppo is purported to be making one if they can get the licensing worked out.

My Oppo plays all formats except blu-ray, and my PS3 does that, so I'm covered for all contingencies. If you like video games at all, the PS3 is the way to go. Even if you don't play games it's about the same cost as a blu-ray player and it's upgradable for any new software advances that come out. The players are not upgradable.

From what I have been reading Blue-Ray is going to win the battle.
I thought for sure a year ago that HD would win but I was wrong. I'm still waiting for it to get over before I purchase a new player. Gotta get past that "Cost Recovery Factor". They just want to darn much jack for those players right now. The money would be better spent on a good video scaler that will up convert every fricken thing !

I rent dvd's not buy (with rare exceptions), and you cant rent hd movies out here in the sticks.

And my dvd does sacd and dvda.

I wonder how long br and hd will co-exist?

Just an interesting tidbit on the BluRay VS HD-DVD front for you to ponder. All this week's ad flyers for the weekend sales came out today and several stores are suddenly offering deep discounts on HD-DVD players, but full price on BluRays. Even more telling is that the large chain stores that were regularly advertizing both HD-DVD and BluRay titles are only advertizing BluRay titles this week .... and their Web sites are only promoting the BluRay titles too. HD-DVD titles are still available, just not promoted on the main pages. Maybe this is just a coincidence here locally, but it does make me wonder.

But are these bray players that they are offering at a discount the "old" versions?

Hopefully someone can step in here and educate me, but br players did not initally have to support one of the "new" audio or video formats, or maybe it was decoding capabilities, cant remember what it was now.

But now br has changed the requirements and all new players must include this feature.

So this may be a way to clear out all the players that don't support this.

there selling out the HD not BR because BR is here to stay and the HD's are going to die thus keeping BR players higher and them promoting BR format movies is the way I read OBI56 post.
most rental places now have a bigger selection of BR then HD.
