I found it...center speaker

Post by jimw » Sun Mar 09, 2008 4:23 pm

The pefect center for Carver ALS (unless you have the space for an ALS as a center that is).

VMPS LRC. In piano black to match the Plats of course. \:D/

Got it last week from a gent on Agon and was amazed at how similiar the tonal character was to the Carvers.

Spent some hours with it this weekend tweakinng it (there are controls for the mid ribbon and ribbon tweeter). Got the REQ Wizard out and went to town (i know it's hardly precision measurement but it works well enough to confirm what you hear, and sometimes what you don't). You'd be amazed at how similiar the response curves are.

I highly reccomend it.

Has anyone finished a Carver ribbon center yet?

Yea, I was hoping she'd chime in with a progress report. Last I heard she was fiddling with x-overs.

I'll post a pic when my stand gets here next week.

I really do enjoy the ribbon for HT.
I will be looking for an amp for it shortly.
In the mean time I have been running it from the marantz HT receiver and have set the speaker to small, which then sends any freq below 100hz to the sub.
As soon as I get an amp for it I will play with the EQ some more as the top end really does need a tweek.
I have been looking at one of these as a possible amp?

Not sure if anyone has heard one. They aren't carvers (I know) but I think it may work fine for me. The price is nice and it's a small unit.
I may even buy two-one bridged in mono for the centre and run the surrounds off of the other.

What ever works for you is what matters! I am not crazy about sending the low freq to the sub instead of being in the front speaker. This is something I considered before using a ribbon. But having said that it doesn't seem to distract from the movie for me.

Outlaw amps and preamp/processors are pretty good gear. I know a few people who have outlaw gear, and that brand seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck. Amps have lots of tight power, and their pre/pro units are FULL of cool HT features.

i've had an outlaw 950 until recently and loved it. their pre/pros are starting to fall behind in features and lack lots of the cool new stuff. their customer support is excellent though. all of there products offer lotsa performance/$ as they're sold direct (no retailers).

their amps are very good but i don't think they are really state of the art - not class g or h so they run kinda warm and they are on the heavy side.

have you seen/heard about the audiocontrol savoy?

Please do tell. I was wondering what anyone was using as a center channel speaker to match ribbon tweeters.

I must say I'm really enjoying it. Can't wait for the new BR players to come out this summer! My music is still stereo only and will probably remain that way with the exception of music/video dvd/bray.

REQ Wizard is room eq wizard. I'm sure it will come up in a google search. It's a free software program and works very well. VERY good for confirming low freq. peaks and nulls. Also measures response up to 20k and shows decay times as well.
