Thanks Bill! We will have to talk together on the setup! I first have to get used to the player first!

Well, unless they made some changes with the SE, I'm pretty well studied in the setup.
It should sound like it isn't there!

Yeah, that's what happens with married couples! Something you really want, you say to wife; Hey get me this for Christmas > it's what I really want!! I wanted a new tool bag for Christmas, so I picked it out, ordered it and it now sits under the tree until Christmas. I've seen pictures of it on-line, but I guess I have to wait to actually hold itBillD wrote:Just got mine back from Oppo, but my wife says it has to stay under the tree 'til Christmas

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Audiophile Upgrade
Well, I played with my new toy all Christmas morning. Backplane is all new with serial port and Special Edition logo back there (not on the front, though - they gave me a decal which I decided not to put on). Without an non-upgraded one to compare it with side-by-side, it's hard to say if I can discern any difference. But it plays everything and I had to reset all my preferences. I know something is different in there because I wrote down all my level settings, and they are slightly different with this update. I've played SACDs DVD-As, DTS CDs and the Blu-ray audio setup disk. I'll watched a Blu-ray movie (Up) this afternoon, so I'll have put it through its paces pretty well. I also watched a regular DVD of Dr. Strangelove earlier to check on the upconverting. No glitches so far. Wish I could do a better A/B comparison, but my sonic memory isn't THAT good. Neither unit sounded bad, and this one sounds great, so I can't complain.
It should sound like it isn't there!

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Audiophile Upgrade
Hey BillD, If my memory serves me correctly, this upgrade was for more the way you are currently using this player. If you use HDMI the upgrade really would not do much for you. How do you have it set-up cable wise? Cool, glad you actually got to play with it, I know it was hard to wait until Christmas!

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Audiophile Upgrade
OK, I run an 8 cable shielded snake from my Oppo to my TGP-III 8-channel input. I also run a two-channel stereo-only pair between the Oppo and my computer for dubbing SACDs. I also run S/PDIF coax from the Oppo to my TGP-III for CD playback and non-Blu-ray DVDs (i.e., Dolby Digital or DTS, but not the Blu-ray versions). I run 8-channel out of the Oppo for Blu-ray movies ( Dolby True-HD and DTS Master HD, and hopefully some new audio-only codecs in the future). As such, I need to adjust the level settings on not only my TGP-III but also the Oppo, as the TGP-III takes 8-channel straight through with no processing whatsoever. My benchmark is to be able to switch back and forth between the 8-channel and the S/PDIF connection and hear no level difference.

Man, that sounds awesome, sure would like to see pictures of this 8 cable set-up. Is this 8 cable shielded snake a special cable designed for this purpose? Thanks BillD!

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Audiophile Upgrade
Well the cable is available. I have one that's similar to the one pictured below, but it has gold plated (better) RCA plugs on it.

I can't seem to find the one I ordered, but it was like $90 or so.

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Audiophile Upgrade
Thanks BillD! That is cool, never really thought about it until now. I was thinking all separate cables and what a nightmare/mess that would be. I see now this cable would actually make it pretty easy to give a try. Thanks again for the Pic!BillD wrote:Well the cable is available.
