Some of what I'll be bringing this year:
Yellowjackets: Time Squared (SACD)
One of my favorite SACDs. Recording is SUPERB and the songs are fantastic. The first cut, "Go Go", is one of my favorite jazz songs, EVER. Nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD with both regular Redbook and Super Audio CD layers.
The Yellowjackets are: Bob Mintzer (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, synthesizer); Russell Ferrante (piano, keyboards); Jimmy Haslip (electric bass); Marcus Baylor (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jean Baylor (vocals).
Norah Jones: Not Too Late (SACD)
Norah Jones is the daughter of sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones, an American concert promoter. Norah has sold almost 40 million albums worldwide, half of them copies of her debut LP "Come Away With Me." She cites her early influences as Billie Holiday and Willie Nelson. She spent her childhood at a variety of musical schools but left her musical studies unfinished when she decided to move to New York, supporting herself by working as a lounge singer.While "Come Away With Me" earned her Album, Record and Song of the Year and Best New Artist awards at the Grammys, I find I REALLY prefer "Not Too Late" as her best effort.
Steely Dan: Everything Must Go
Quite possibly my favorite Steely Dan offering. The title track, "Everything Must Go", is one of my favorite recordings. If you haven't heard any of the "new" Steely Dan, try "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go" soon.
Donald Fagen: As in his Steely Dan efforts, Donald Fagen's recordings are meticulously engineered. ALL recording engineers should take notice of Donald's techniques (as well as Micheal Jackson's). They are two of the
cleanest recording musicians you'll ever find.
Morph the Cat
An EXCELLENT offering by the ubiquitous lead singer from Steely Dan. The LOW bass on this CD is bone-shattering~
Kamakiriad
Probably my favorite of all Mr. Fagen's offerings. "Countermoon" & "On the Dunes" are really great songs with wicked lyrics, but "Teahouse on the Tracks" has one of the best trombone solos I've heard in my life. A must-have recording.
The Nightfly
An excellent recording which has the distinction of being the VERY FIRST digitally-recorded commercial CD! "Green Flower Street" and "Ruby Baby" are two very old songs that are a true treat in the form presented on this CD.
