PM 600 power amp

Hello, I'm Merle.

please forgive a newbie question.

I recently purchased a second hand PM 600.
Just wanted to know what I need to check before firing it up. Are there measurements to do to see if it works properly, and where ?

any help or advice appreciated.

I don't know much about the professional amps, but someone we'll be along with more information. Be patient; the membership here is small & most work during the day, so it could be a while to get a reply~

I've always wanted one of these, just to see how close they are to the non-pro amp sound wise.

I tend to try out amps that Im not sure of on a spair speaker. I hook up only 1 channel at a time and input audio 1 input at a time. The adjustment pots are normally dirty so work them back and forth.

this amp is really well built.

I'll find spare speakers and try not to blow 'em !

I'll keep you informed, and will take some pics of the guts. PCB is of stunning quality.

Powering the amp up, there's a slight mecanical hum (50Hz buzz ?)coming from it. Not really loud, but definitely audible (No speakers connected.).

Is it normal ?

funny thing : my setup is now (almost) 100% made in U.S.A !

50 hertz? Where are you located??

Not uncommon for the transformer to have a hum....seems to be the norm on older stuff rather than the exception. As long as it isn't coming through the outputs, you're golden~

I live in Switzerland, and AC is 50Hz, 240V.
I guess I'll begin by checking DC offset at the output. If it is fine, I'll try with a spare Rowen R4 loudspeaker.

Well, with that sensitivity, if you put 1½V in at 1000Hz (AC), you should read 200W (0dB) on the LED meter with nothing attached. That would tell you if the thing will go into protection or not. If it passes that test, I wouldn't hesitate to attach speakers to it. Free signal generators are available for a computer, and you can attach it to a preamp and adjust the level on the preamp to get 1.5V out with the tone generator software generating 1kHz. You do have a volt meter, yes?
