Dear Toy Maker,

I just PM you my shipping address. Please check it out.

I have been using a pair of AL-III for 16 years since I was in the US and later moved to Thailand. The ribbon is now degraded. It starts to produce buzzing sound badly due to loss of ribbon tension and the permanent magnets start to fall off due to glue degradation.

Please also tell me the method of payment.

Hi,
I just bought a pair of Amazing's with the 30' ribbons. The right top Ribbon has a weird kind of buzz at certain frequencies. Is it possible to upgrade both pair to 60" Ribbons? My zip is 49333-8374.

Thank you,
Miguel...

Yes it's possible.... But when changing the ribbons, you also have to change or modify the crossover as well. The ribbing are different, and need slightly different parts.

I will see if we have the schematics for the Platinum speakers crossover.

James Sauter (Toymaker) is the re-builder, and he would know best about the upgrade idea, but the 30" ribbons are no longer rebuilt the way they were originally manufactured - they now employ the same four-trace ribbon material as the later 48" and 60" types. This makes for higher impedance, which your amplifier might appreciate, but there might be crossover modifications needed in either case, whether you go with 2x30" or a single 60" per channel. The 30" are easier to ship and handle, and two of them sound the same as a single 60". Rebuilding the 30" would cost you less than a complete upgrade, as you wouldn't have to toss your four old ribbons and buy two new 60" new ones.

hello,
i will be purchasing a Deqx processor in a few months. so crossovers wont be a problem. ill actally be using the active ones in the Deqx. i did download the ribbon repair order form and ill get these sent out in the next few weeks. any tips or things i need to know in removing the ribbons? ill pack 'em real real good. i have a 53' roll of industrial foil encased bubble wrap!

just wanted to make sure you guys are still fixing these things..i played the Eagles farewell dvd last night and it sent shivers down my spine! what a kick ass set of speakers!! Bob Carver really outdid himself with these bad boys...although another Sunfire amp is now on the list along with a 30 amp circuit, i was showing drops to 90volts on my panamax!

Buy one of those guns cases lined with foam from WalMart & ship them in the. THE BEST way to ship ribbons. James can ship them back in it. Works like a charm.

Yup!!! Got an email from the people that are making the new Kapton just yesterday. From what I've been told in the email, it should be here the 1st week in Jan. I'm told that they were having trouble acquiring some of the materials this time around.
As soon as it arrives we will be getting everyone's ribbons back to them as quickly as possible.

At $1000 per pound, and a 10lb minimum order from Dupont, this stuff's not the easiest thing to get your hands on.
From what I understand, our material is pretty rare being 1/3 of a thousandth thick. The thinnest they even make.

If anything happens sooner, I'll be glad to let you know.

James,

Isn't the thickness of that the biggest difference in the "sound" of the Carver ribbon versus the BG? So worth the effort.

Absolutely!!!! If you've ever heard a BG ribbon, they are VERY shrill compared to the Carvers

Good news indeed. You must have a huge backlog to fill.
Looking forward to hear from you.
