OO's "Sloppy Seconds" Have Arrived!

Ok; the "spare" ("sloppy seconds"... ) A-705 that OO has replaced with another unit and thus generously gifted me with this one has arrived.......have not opened it up yet (the unit...have opened the box; well packed, no apparent shipping damage!). The little "trimmer" pots at the back that he has "plastic ties" putting lateral force onto (evidently to make them conduct?) looks pretty "inventive"! Hopefully deoxit might fix them...if not I guess I'll replace them. Then I probably will need to get a surround sound decoder/preamp to "feed" these five channels. Currently have a rinky dink one that provides low powered rear and center channel amps and I use my TFM-45 and EPI 1000's for the fronts. Anyone have a recommendation as to which decoder box/preamp might be best for this situation? Will probably contine to use same setup (45 and 1000's) for front channels as I have no plans to get any SS front speakers.

A CT28-V would be around the same year of your 705 that might make a good match. You can find these out there pretty cheap these days. I put my CT28V in storage because it has a cracked output and I replaced it with a Sunfire TGP-III. You also might want to consider the Sunfire processors > they are "really nice". I enjoyed the CT28V while it was in my system, good pre-amp. That was nice of OO, great addition!

Might be "in luck": the AudioSource SS processor I have does have "signal out" for all 5 channels (so I can bypass the crappy amps it has for rears and center channels). It hums some, but I'm hoping that's the amps and not the preamps it has...

The A-705 has two "issues": several of the trimmer pots at the rear might need replacing. This looks easy and can be done w/o removing the amp boards. The other issue is that one of the RCA input plugs for one of the channels is broken (no outer ground metal). To replace this you'd need to remove this amp board and that looks like it would require a complete teardown as the "back plane" CC needs to be removed....anyone ever work on one of these? I can just get three channels working (all I need for my SS setup...fronts go thru my TFM-45) without doing this, but I'd like to get it to 100% operational if easy/possible...

Actually turned out to be very easy to remove the amp boards (I commend Bob on this design ): you just unscrew from I/O plugs and chassis the backplane of the amp and the boards unplug easily from the "motherboard". Here is pic of the one with the busted RCA female plug. The trimmer pot that are "broken" on some of the 5 amp boards is right above this plug. Will take it over to electronics parts place tomorrow at lunch time and maybe they'll have these two parts..cool!:

I personally believe the 705 is just excellent, and have one hooked to my new 55" TV.
The one you now have was bi-amping my CRS3 speakers with no problem, but I got a deal on the Sunfire amp Kingman said I wanted/needed -

Boo-ya! Mouser has the trimmer pots (Piher 50k with hex hole)....ordered 5 @ 0.46 each...now just need to fix the one broken RCA plug and this amp should be "good as new"...here's hoping anyway. Then I probably will see what it sounds biamping the sphere's...always wanted to see what biamping sounds like anyway!

Ok: all fixed (I HOPE!). Replaced all five of the trimmer pots and replaced the broken RCA plug on the left most input plug. Will hook it all up in the SS system manyana:

So, I'm curious... how does it sound? As good as the TFM-45? Better? How about compared to the Sunfire?
