I'm going to audition a pair of AL-lll+ tomorrow . Does anyone have any sugestions on anything I should be looking for as far as ribbon/woofer and crossover condition. I am thinking of using a M-4.0t amp if I do get them, anyone out there use that setup?

Play them at high levels. Listen for ribbon buzz or woofer flap. Listen all the way up the ribbon and then lay flat and listen to the woofer. They are great speakers if properly working.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

Take a CD with a Girls/womens voice and Piano that should help expose any possible buzzing!
BillD, You will be forever with us! RIP until we meet again on the other side...

Where are you auditioning them?
Female voice & dynamic piano are excellent "revealers". Dianna Krall, Norah Jones are double threats!

Re: AL-lll+ audition
listen to the woofers, if they rattle or make noise, subtract at least 150.00 from the price....
got a test tract cd? test tones will also bring out the flaws, especially the woofers
that amp will drive them okay.....
but then you will want more.......

Re: AL-lll+ audition
Good info ! I plan to take a little fourplay and the Linus and Lucy track havn't figured out the vocals yet. Sound like their aren't alot of visual things to look for.
Re: AL-lll+ audition
look at the ribbons, bring a flashlight, look for damage,.....
ie:tears, small holes from kid fingers, or pencils....
corrosion spots, real loose areas of ribbon, not a total deal breaker, if they sound good and the price is right....etc
remember these things are close to 20yrs old.
these will have a horizontal lines in the ribbon, or they may have a wrinkled looked to them, the full length of the foil, this is normal.
my al3's range from just a light line to a real deep peak to peak look
good luck
ps: if they dont sound right, buzz, creek, ribbon slap....
if the price is more than 350/400$ walk away, these pop up often enough to get a good set, I've walked from 2 sets....

Re: AL-lll+ audition
That will be a lot of work for your M-4.0. I ran my AL-IIIs with a TFM-45 for a short time (similiar amp) and it struggled.
Sunfire TGP-III, 200x5, True Sub MK II, Klipsch Modded Chorus II's, Grant Fidelity: TubeDAC11
Re: AL-lll+ audition
Well if I get them sounds like an excuse to get another carver amp !!!!!!!!!
Re: AL-lll+ audition
if you get them, a sunfire 300x2 will make them sing. as well as a set of new high grade/high dollar capacitors for the xovers, wow i say.

Re: AL-lll+ audition
I did get them ! They look very good ,very well cared for no holes,or wrinkles in the ribbons and the woofer surounds had been treated years ago to keep them pliable. I just had enough time to get them home and throw speaker wire to them for a quick fix! They didn't sound as good in my room but I didn't have time to even start working on placement and adjusting the crossovers. I will have to say that they do like power, I noticed that leds on my m-4.0t move a lot more than on the other speakers they where driving. I did happen to buy a 7t last week, I might try to run one with the 7t and one with the 4.0 in mono just to see how they compare to each other. I am out of town until thurdsay I hope to do a little playing then.
Re: AL-lll+ audition
From what I understand, placement is "everything" on these speakers. Congratulations!
