Clarity of Sound

Post by mjcmt » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:45 am

I had a lot for gear and put it all up for sale to thin in out and pay bills. The Carver receiver and AR speakers sold first so my music system is different w/o Carver. (If I come across another Carver Receiver 900 at a price I can afford, I would not hesitate to purchase it for the bedroom.)

Mac c37, Mac mr77, Yamaha cdx450, AES superamp2, Altec 15
How does it sound? Amazing clarity, involvement, and immediacy. The 10' x 13' room is really too small for the speakers to breath and for the sound to develop before reaching the listener. Therefore I'm listening in near field rather than for music appreciation.

Sorry about the late reply. Thanks everyone. I'm lovin' the sound of this system. There is something special about the sound. The Altecs attribute to it's spectacular sound for sure.

A cdp upgrade would be in order sometime, but the Yamaha is quite good.
The rack is an Target Audio rack from England. I put a maple shelf for the top shelf which is spiked for a TT.
It may be nice to get a matching Mac power amp for an all Mac system, or sell the Mac and get a tube pre for a tube system. But it sounds good as is.

I have another change to the system. I picked up a vintage 1989 Sony ES cdp with remote from GW. It is a 5 disc model C8ESD w/ true variable analogue output (not variable digital controlled like the Yamaha), as well as digital optical out if I go the external DAC route. It is a substantial improvement over the Yamaha, which was no slouch. The Sony has amazing bass, a big full bodied sound, with greater air and soundstage depth. Initially it seems a little edgy on the top end but that will probably smooth out, because I leave my cdps on 24/7. I'm quite stoked with the improvement to this system.

I have been using the newly purchased vintage Sony ES player for a few days now. It has really smoothed out in the top end and the soundstage has opened up and is really 3d. This is a nice improvement to my system. These Sony ESD players were an all out attempt by Sony to produce great cdps, and best yet is that they are not expensive used. My main problem is I wish the room was larger as I feel I'm too close to horn speakers.

When I come up there, I'll have to bring my Jolida tubed CDP to see if the horns relax a bit more than what you are experiencing. I'm trying to get up with Ron Buffington this weekend so I can get a listen on at Liquid Hi-Fi down here in Pineville. If it weren't for that, I'd hop on up. I'm looking forward to listening to your rig.
In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence.

The best way to enjoy digital music reproduction is to never listen to a good analogue reproduction.
