Bob Carver LLC debuts the Amazing Line Source Speaker at Axpona Trade show March 8th in Jacksonville Florida

Lexington, Kentucky, Bob Carver LLC - a specialist in the design and manufacture of audiophile products announced a radically new Line Source Speaker to be debuted at the AXPONA Trade Show.

What we will hear:
My Amazing Line Source Speakers present a huge and majestic soundstage that captures the complete sense of acoustic space that helps make music come to life in our listening rooms.
You will hear beautiful sound images inside that larger acoustic that will seem so real it will be downright spooky.
There will be a soundstage that extends far back from the speakers, and it will be much wider than the speakers.
A solo female singer will appear center stage, up and back slightly, perfectly focused, singing her heart out as if she were in our room, all the while being inside that larger acoustic bubble. It is very, very spooky.
And I promise that Beethoven’s Ninth symphony will bring tears to your eyes - Bob Carver.
Bob Carver continues to astound me by applying physics theory to everyday problems resulting in jaw dropping acoustical transparency and realism. There is nothing “Mad” about his science and once again Bob backs his claims with unmatched performance - Bob Farinelli.

How it works: A line source speaker is simply a speaker so tall and acoustically long that we, the listener, hear a speaker that goes all the way to infinity. Up to infinity and down to infinity, resulting in what a scientist would call a “perfect wave launch.”
The wave from the speaker sounds as if it emanates from a gossamer thin filament running from below the center of the earth to beyond the moon. A pure cylindrical sound wave.
When we listen to such a wave, we find that we can hear musical nuances that we often cannot hear at all using conventional speakers.
An analogy is to consider a thin pole that is eight feet tall, extending from floor to ceiling. On the pole are mounted 22 lit birthday candles, each a light source. Additionally, imagine the floor and ceiling to be perfectly polished mirrors. When we look down a the bottom of our speaker, we will see lit candles reflected in the mirror continuing all the way down to minus infinity. If we look up towards the top of our speaker, we will see the reflections of candles that go up to plus infinity. Here’s the best part: All these reflections are real light sources to our eyes, as real as any real candle; we can read a book by their light. The candles in the mirrors make light just as well as the actual candles in the room on that pole. Absolutely non-intuitive! Now instead of candles, imagine that we replace them with lots of small loudspeaker drivers. The same holds true for speakers and candles alike; the speakers in the mirror make just as much sound as the speakers in the room, and behave for sound the same way as the candles behaved for light.
Here is the second best part: we can remove the polished mirrors and just use the floor and ceiling to make the line source work perfectly! - Bob Carver

If you spent that on Amazings,
you'd have enough ribbons to span a football field and put a woofer every foot.

Re: New ALS $22,000

I'll build you a set of spherical speakers for ~half that price (14 8" and 1" drivers per speakers). And the last time I checked, musical instruments emit sound from POINT sources, not "lines to infinity". Spherical speakers also emit sound (spherically in all directions just like a musical instrument!) from a point source (i.e., the center of the sphere). Just say'n..... Makes me all the more anxious to finish my 8" woofered HW veneered spherical speakers! The proof is in the listening of course. To each his own!

But one thing I don't see addressed in these ALS's is "enclosure" rigidity (i.e., the "grounding" of the driver frame relative to the cone motion). For signal "purity" it must be (as close as possible to) zero. Which is another reason I like the 1.5" thick curved shell of the sphere's: the "arch" effect of this makes these enclosures ~4x stiffer than conventional "flat plate" enclosures (or more quanitatively, the fundamental (i.e., lowest) frequency of a spherical shell is ~2x that of a flat plate (which means that the stiffness is ~4x because frequency varies as the square root of stiffness...).
Family room: 400 disk changer with PS Audio Digital Link III DAC; Technics SL-1100A TT. QED Quenx1 IC's from DAC & TT to Adcom GTP-602 preamp/Tuner. AudioQuest King Cobra IC's from preamp to M1.0t mk-II opt2. QED Silver Spirals 4M wires to EPI 1000’s.
Living room: AudioQuest Black Mamba 8M IC's from family room preamp to Barcus-Berry 2002R Sonic Maximizer to GlowPower Zyxt IC's to Sunfire 300x2 to Nordost 6M bi-source wires to AOS 28" MDF spherical speakers using six 8" woofers and eight 1" dome tweeters symm. arranged around the surface.
SS system: CX-995V DVD to AV-705x 5 channel amp (center/rears) & M1.0t mk-II opt2(fronts).
Garage: TLM-3600 CDP to MXR150 Receiver (pre) to TFM-42 to EPI 400 speakers.

May the audio Gods bless this speaker. Unfortunately, I can not make this show...damnit. 22K had better well make some ears perk. That's all I have to say about that.

Re: New ALS $22,000

To answer Ed's question: this is an exceptionally rigid structure, as well as having woofers on opposite sides for motion cancellation. I don't see that as an issue.

I will predict that they will be routinely offered for under $15k by late 2013.

"Obviously, only dedicated audiophiles will want a $27K speaker that stretches from floor to ceiling, which is why Carver’s also working on smaller models. One is about 2.5 feet high, the other looks less than a foot high — essentially a slimmer, taller, extruded-aluminum version of the original Cinema Ribbon with just one woofer instead of two.

Referring to the 2.5-foot-high prototype, Carver said, “It’s surprising. When you play one of them in mono, it just sounds like a little speaker sitting on the floor. But when you play them in stereo, the sound image rises up and they sound huge."

Wish I knew more about those midrange drivers. t/s parameters, manufacturer. They might be right for an ESL project idea I'm fiddling with.
