So... life was good until you added the Onkyo. Seems that might be the source of the problem.
Now, having said that, you might have an impedance mismatch between the Onkyo and the amp. The Onkyo is a receiver, yes? How does it manage line output/volume control to a power amp? . Perhaps a tube buffer would help?
Somebody mentioned a "Whack-job medal" in a certain thread. Bad, bad idea IMHO!!

Facts of life......an AVR is a piss poor substitute for a dedicated pre amp, even a crappy Yamaha.
