Ray, here are a few that I have rolled and a short description. BTW the 12ax7 socket is cool because you can run a 12au7 or 5751 in it.

Mullard 12ax7 10M series; full bodied, warm smooth mids.
Amperex 12ax7 labled Sel Lorenz with falcon logo dimple disc getter; big fat soundstage kinda like a Telefunken on steroids.
Mullard 12ax7 labled Siemens ECC83 with falcon logo; a little flat sounding untill I use them on a harsh/bright recording and they really sound great.
1949 Ken Rad 12ax7; these sound great with any music nice airy topend and smooth midrange and bass
GE 5751 five star triple mica black plates; nice tight bass, very focused and a bit steril.
1957 Sylvania 5751 triple mica black plate d-getter; very nice airy topend tight bass liquid midrange, these babys are nice.
1957 Brimar 13D5 (12au7) very mellow and s.w.e.e.t. low noise, not even a hint of harsh-ness
1957 Amperex ECC186 / 7316 (12au7) very 3-D with airy open topend and liquid midrange.
Eric, you forgot to warn Ray about the Mullards 10M prices, you don't want him to have a heart attack! I have to back you up on the Siemens dual post getter 12AX7 it's a awesome tube!!!
And I have to back you on the RFT 12AU7 midrange- that's where I am at. 8)

I've been robbing folks at thrift stores, they have no idea what they have and it's all cheap. I've found Tele's, the Sylvania 5751s, Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8s and 12AX7s, Mullards and EIs that I 'might' have $100 in all together. I found a $25 signal generator filled with Telefunken audio tubes that looks like it has been well cared for. Can't wait to roll them in the Sunfire.

Thanks for the pointers guys!!!! Your advice has given me lots of things to think about and avenues to find some of this stuff without robbing the bank.

Wish I knew then what I know now... #-o ......
I have previously felt like the folks that dumped their gear to the thrift store would if they just read your post Ray!.

A forum member knew exactly what tube it was that went bad in my tube tester when I pm'ed and asked if he ever heard of it. I went and googled the darn thing and HOLY SMOKES!!!

..........I would have removed the tube as soon as I got the tester (while it was in good shape) had I only known.... put it on eBay Japan and bought 5 more tube testers. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

I hope all of you enjoy your little 20watt EL84amps as much as I'VE have. I'm certain they will rock on with the new pre we'll be building at this year's Fest.

Funny thing happened. After swapping amps with MR HP I decided to test both amps before I sold them. I've been running the stock Sovtek EL84 tubes in one of them and I think I like them better then the new style Mullards.

I also ordered a pair of the MATCHED PAIR 'REFLEKTOR' SOVTEK EL84M that Mark posted as well to try out.

After speaking with Eric a couple weeks ago I thought I would try out a couple 12AX7's. Here is one I am looking at, though I hate the idea of ordering from Hong Kong:

Any other suggestions?
