Who remembers the proper value transformer?

Post by angelod307 » Wed Feb 12, 2014 8:34 pm

What value would i want if anyone knows is the optimum voltage for the power transformer if i bought a new one? Interested if it is a 550,575,600 volt or what? The carverfest amp has a 650.

Don't understand your question Angelo. You seem to answer that it was a 650 secondary.

Are you asking for a direct replacement for the CF amp or in something else? Clearly, a slightly less secondary would mean less need to drop voltage in other ways. But if the next smaller is 50v less, that'd be too much lower.

Or are you asking something else?

As i read wiki. 300 volts for most, and some rated up to 420 it said. So i thought to myself if i bought new transformers, what would i buy to make the amps more friendly and less likely to have a run away tube.

Since we're on the subject...
I was told that the production version would have different power transformers, in part, to allow for lower voltage tubes.
Anyone have a Black Magic and can check the secondary voltage and/or part number?

In part Angelo, you'd need to look at a fully modded unit and see how much is being dropped in the B+ on the added parts trying to bring it down.

But off the cuff, I'd suspect a secondary around 25v less would be pretty close to the desired number.

Don't forget that the rated number listed is usually what is expected with the rated primary voltage and the secondary fully loaded to the rated current draw. Typically the primary is higher with what you get from the wall and you'd hope to not be 100% loaded on the secondary. So you wind up with a B+ that's higher than the numbers from the manufacturer.

However, if you stay in the same brand as the original came with and step down to the next lower, you should be able to pretty much nail what your going to have based on the difference from what you have now.

I thought that the 3 zener diodes each one rated at 25 volts connected in series would represent a voltage drop of 75 volts. With the other resistors parralled across them I would still think the voltage drop is more than 25 volts. What say you Markie?

That's on the bias Harry. First comes the B+ value.

Regulating the bias down comes after you generate the HV.

I am not talking about the bias. The B+ mod by tubular joe is what I was referring to. The bias uses 2 15 volt zeners in parallel.

Well, then yes if zeners are dropping the B+ then count that as excess that's not needed. Guess I missed that as going on. Dah....

That's the lib way. Don't ask questions, toe the line, keep your head down and please, please don't notice the end result.

Alright...back to audio....no need for the dark side.
