Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
Great info Robert. Guess I'd only seen the later versions then.
Maybe we'll see which version he's blessed with and see if we can get it remotely fixed up. No battery needed....

Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
The only problem is finding those big NP caps; that, and paying for them.

Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
I ran some test tones last night and discovered something else. The tweeters sound different, left one has a higher pitch. However they were rebuilt a few months ago by James. So I switched the right tweeter to the left speaker and now it has the higher pitch sound which indicates a crossover problem with at least the left speaker. I have the Platinum IV's I guess? They have the trims for high, mid, low.
Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
You could well have a problem with the ribbon section of a crossover. The first thing I'd check there would be those controls, esp. the middle ones. Even if they look to be adjusted the same, one channel might have it's wiper on a dead spot. So move them back and forth a few times, as you listen to an upper midrange test tone or to pink noise. There may be some abrupt level changes as a dirty control cuts in and out.
After that it gets less simple. Some ohmmeter checks of each resistor in there, comparing one channel against the other, might find an open power resistor. There are also more caps in there...

Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
Talmadge3 did you put new wire in the silvers or just cut and re connect the wires for the ribbons? I had Roland re do both my cross overs and they sound great and are better in all aspects.

I wish I had the plats. But there are only 3 sub woofers and a 48 inch ribbon. I bought these for 100.00 from a guy here in Michigan and re built every square inch including the wood finish and all of the cloth. Thanks for the kind words

talmadge3 - Your last post seems to have been cut off after about half a dozen words. There must have been more, right?

He cut the wrong wire! I told him...the yellow wire...the yellow one....
He cut the blue one!
Watch enough movies and you know to never cut the blue one as the seconds count down.

When I switched the ribbons I just cut the wires and then reconnected them. Thankfully there wasn't an explosion!
Re: Platinum Amazings Lost Bass!
Tell me something guys. How much would I lose by going to Sunfire CRS3's coupled with two 18" sealed craigsubs driven by 1000 watts each? I already have the subs and amp. I'm getting a little frustrated with the Amazings.
