What would YOU do?

Post by Magnaryder » Sun Feb 23, 2014 7:45 pm

For those of you watching you know we had an incident at my home several weeks ago.

viewtopic.php?f=62&t=18459

So, while I'm waiting for my insurance company to pony up I'll pose this question to you.

If you had say $5,000US and HAD to spend it on audio gear what would you buy? Keep in mind you have to replace at the very least an amp and a pre amp.

Let's hear from you

ray..

yeah, I know I shoulda bought the gear Jesse was selling a month ago....ok I fucked up.

Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Are speakers needed? If not, what speakers are we going to drive?

You have a 5k limit, what preamp and amp would you buy? Or are you frugal and get a whole rig or 2. I've seen some inexpensive tube gear, speakers, headphones on Audiogon lately.

Ray,

I thought we were replacing just the electronics you lost. If speakers are needed, my first thought is always ALS, some model. But if we are limited to tube amps, some speakers that don't need so much power would be required to stay under budget, unless you've developed a hankering for pretty low level playback.

For under $2000 Hsu will hook you up with an absolute first-rate powered sub, plus a pair of two-way spkrs (horn tweeters that don't sound horny), with a mid-bass unit as well. These are pretty efficient; good looking finish as well. So $3000 remains for tube electronics - not my area, as you know, so there my usefulness ends. ](*,)

If my Lightstar was beyond repair I would probably replace it with a McIntosh MC252, they a pop up from time to time on Audiogon in the over $2000 but not above $3000 range. As for preamps there a few BAT's (Balanced Audio Technologies) on Audiogon right now.
