Sovtek 6bq5 500 volt , Russian military tubes, not USA type.

Post by angelod307 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 9:25 pm

So I learned something, this may be common knowledge , but this was this first I heard of this so I pass it on.

Hello, I think the plates are a little thicker so it doesn't red plate (glow in the wrong areas) as easily as a regular 6BQ5,
and maybe its redesigned with slightly bigger spacing. The vent holes are different, and it has 2 getters instead of just one.
The military (EL84M) ones are designed for 10,000 instead of 3,000 hours. But that's when used conservatively.
USA 6BQ5s were rated for 300 volts max, but Dynaco Voxx Scott and guitar amps often run them around 420 volts.
I know 2 people that have VOXX 6BQ5 amps, and they only get about 50 hours out of new 6BQ5s, because regular 6BQ5s run so close to glowing.
I've restored hundreds of vintage amps, and even with new coupling caps, vintage 6BQ5s run very close to glowing dull red (which wears them out very quickly). If your amp is 14 watts/pair of 6BQ5/EL84, you probably can get by with regular 6BQ5s. If your amp is rated for 20 watts/pair, I'd use these.
The extra getters make them last longer. Thanks, Joe

I have had very good performance with them Angelo,, no red plates with these puppies. I like the sound of the nos American tubes,, they just did not last too long,,this was before Harry did the Zener tweak.

Angelo,
The original tubes that came with the "kit" were not really doing the amp justice. I eventually had one of them red plate and did some investigating on the EL84 tubes (new to me at the time, as I am still a young fellow... that was the generation before me that did the "tube stuff"- ).

Currently I am running the russian tubes Mark posted a while back. sound pretty nice-good detail, air, etc (just a little noisy at dead silence, but meh...still great sound) nice orange glow, no red plating. Also running the soviet 6ax7's setup on mine (as originally designed by the BobFather) I think they are nick-named Red Rockets"?
Had the re-issue Mullard EL84/6bq5's in for 2 yrs previous with no issues, they work well also for a reasonable price (4 matched tubes @ 75 bucks).
Research the plate voltages on the mfg's specific tubes. The soviet and the re-issue Mullards are both capable of sustained higher voltages at the plate- that seemed to make the diff for me. Cheers!~

Red Rockets! That's funny.

Have you noticed Martin's avatar? Now that, that's a red rocket!! ](*,) Notice the exposed OT...has to have been at CF during the build.

I was there "At the Fest!" Hope you were too!

Mark-
Maybe the original tubes at the fest were "red rockets"? At least some of them were....I SAW it!

Angelo- a word of caution on some of the so called equivalent 7189's This is from Brent Jesse's website: (may be the 7189a's?)
The 7189 is an "industrial" version of the 6BQ5. It can handle 400 volts on the screen and plate, but otherwise looks just like a 6BQ5. Usually you can use a 7189 in place of a 6BQ5, but NOT the other way around! The 7189A has even higher ratings, at 440 volts, and has a different pinout. The pinout difference may make this tube incompatible with 6BQ5/EL84 circuits, unless you know it will work!

Here is a little more info on the 6BQ5. You have your standard EL84's and then there is the E84L....there is a difference in that the E84L or sometimes called the 7320 will handle 450 volts at the plate. The Baby Blacks put out 405v so the E84L is nice and safe to run on the BB.

The Siemens labled RTC E84L's Im running and recommending are the the good ones like mentioned above.

I got mine $150 for a set of four plus $9 shipping. I don't think that's too bad.

I have tried various different EL84 variants and my favorite was an inexpensive set of Russian 6P14P-EV's that came form the Reflektor factory (that was purchased by Sovtek). Powerful and clean, with AMAZING bass. Bought the quad for around $40 shipped.
