New Google patent search - much better than the USPTO "search engine" if you could even call it that.
I found 10 of my own patents in here with one search.
You get to download the pdf file for free!

Lived in VA, NJ, and was also filing in the 1940s and 1950s.

I think Bob was born in the mid to late 1940's.
It should sound like it isn't there!

Before I added quotes around "Robert W. Carver" there were tons of false matches. Just like the phonebook.
