How many watts per channel do you run with?

An interesting question was raised on another forum I hang out on and I thought that I would ask the same here to see what happens....

How many watts per channel do you run with?

Tube or SS?

201 WPC on mains + 450W on Sub All SS (M-400t + Polk Sub)

But in realilty, I rarely see more than lets say 5 WPC on average

380 WPC on mains, (Speakers are a 4 ohm nominal load so I guess you could say 600 WPC which is what my amp is rated at for a 4 ohm load). S.S.


My headphone amp? That's rated at approx. 1 WPC class A, and is a tube amp.

One M1.5 on the right channel and one on the left.

350 on each woofer and 350 on each ribbon. Solid state. One day soon I will up it to 500 on each.

Given that the peak to average ratio of most music is 10 - 20 dB, that 15 W amplifier would need to put out a clean 1500W for transients.

I'm running (right now) two bridged M-500t into stacked Klipsch Cornwall II's, Denon HT 's 90W to Klipsch surrounds/center and one bridged M-1.0t to a klipsch sub. Soon to be 5 M-500t and 2 M-1.0t

Well I wonder... the EIA specs say 1000W at 8 ohms and the FTC specs say 800W at 8. So which ever they are - It's plenty loud with lots of bottom when I bridge those old ashly amps.

Well... I rarely ever have see the LEDs jump on either my 1.0 or 1.5 so I'm guessing a couple hundred watts per on the 1.5 and perhaps 100 - 150 on the 1.0.

Tomstat, if those LEDs are spaced the same on your M-1.0t as on the M-400t, then they represent 0db, -5db, -10db, -20db, -40db and - infinity. Assuming 0db=200WPC, then the first one from the top would represent about 60WPC, the second one from the top represents 20WPC, the third one from the top represents 2WPC, the next one down 0.02WPC (1 fiftieth of a watt) and the last one represents next to no power being generated. you could approximately double those figures for the M1.5t.

I've never managed to get the top LED to even flicker on my M-400t and only had the -5db LED light up once or twice and that volume was close to deafening for me, so if you are using 200WPC on average on your M-1.5t, either your listening room is huge, your speakers are really inefficient, you like it really loud or you have gone deaf .... Or maybe I'm the weenie who doesn't like to listen as loud as you guys do .....

Well, this will be a little tough for me... I need to do some math.........

The LS amp is rated: 300W into 8 ohms (24.8dBW), 600W into 4 ohms (24.8dBW), 1200W into 2 ohms

My ribbons are 2 ohms, and I get the meters bouncing around 75% at times...

The other amp, ODL HT-2 is rated @ 260 watts RMS per channel into 4 ohms, which is what the 12" subs in the speakers are rated....

So looks like I have to potential of running around 1400-1500 watts per channel, and the only thing that's going to blow would be the ribbons

Show me anyone else dumping 1000w straight into their ribbons.
I really plan on re-kaptoning my ribbons soon... but before I do, I plan on TRYING to fry them. Maybe I'll hold off till CarverFest, and do a live demo. I want to see the magic smoke crackle out of a ribbon. I would hope screaming 1200 watts into a ribbon would kill it.
So far, these ribbons have turned a TFM-45 into their 1st victim, let's see if they can withstand the wrath of the Lightstar.....

I'm running 400 Watts per channel into the AL-III ribbons, and another 400 WPC into the woofers.

The 400 WPC is an 8 ohm rating. So...

I'm running 800 WPC into my 4 Ohm AL-III ribbons, and 800 WPC into the 4 Ohm woofers. I'm also running 800 Watts into my 4 Ohm M&K S125C and 600 WPC into my 6 Ohm surround DCM Time Windows. Total Watts = 5,200. And that's in a 10' x 12' x 10' room
