Put me down for a set of 'Total Shit' wires. Probably sound better than the ones I'm listening to now..... as if I could hear the difference. Do they come in balanced silver? The ringing in my ear has subsided a bit since I quit Whirlpool and my last hearing test showed it has actually improved lately, so I *might* be able to hear a difference...or not.

I'd love to post a list of the gear I'm bringing, but I'm planning some MAJOR upgrades over the summer, and won't know until August for sure what I'll be bringing...

But I WILL be bringing my Silver 7t's, all my White Zombie and Black Mountain Silver cables, the Benchmark DAC, and SOME sort of Martin Logan speakers (Probably the Scenerios, but maybe something a little newer... ).

Preamp and CD transport are still up in the air too, depending on if I can get a line on the new (used) gear I want, and unload some of my current gear to pay for it...

I'm mighty curious to see if the DAC will improve the sound of the 490t. Ought to be interesting.

Skip, don't forget that the external DAC will completely bypass the tube output stage and its own specific sound, thus removing everything that makes it worth having in the first place.

He's talking about using digital input. The new DAC has analog inputs but the old one only has digital inputs. With your variable output on the 490t, the best (least equipment) option is to go straight into the amp.

It is my understanding that the internal DAC is BEFORE the output stage. The Optical or Digital output is before the internal DAC. Running the variable main output from the SDA-490t results in an Analog signal that has already been converted from the Digital signal. To my knowledge, running an Analog signal to an external DAC won't result in anything but it bypassing the external DAC IF you could plug the analog outputs to some kind of analog inout on the ecternal DAC. Running the Digital or Optical output to the external DAC results in the internal DAC to be the one that is bypassed.

Is my understanding of how this works completely screwed up?

Maybe I'm confused, but why would you take a digital signal and convert it to analog (in the SDA-490t) pass it to a DAC (remember - that means Digital to Analog Converter) in analog format for the DAC to convert it back to digital then re-convert it back to analog? Or does the DAC simply pass the analog through - in which case, why use it at all?

Or, as OBI is stating, if you take the digital out of the SDA-490t, you'll just be testing the transport, which is at least a decade old, and getting none of the benefits of the DAC or the tube sound out of it.

Here would be a VERY interesting A-B-C test....

1st we need a Carver/Sunfire receiver with digital and analog inputs.

Take the 490t,
Run the (tubed) RCAs to a analog input on the receiver...
Connect the digital output direct to the reveicer...
Run the optical output to the external DAC then to the receiver.

Now you can play with all 3 DAC's at the same time.
